Tempered Glass Mosaics - More info

Level:  Suitable for absolute beginners, but will also be enjoyed by people with mosaic experience but no exposure to this particular technique.

One and a half consecutive days.
Day 1                        9 am – 5 pm  Saturday 12th October
Day 2                         10 am – 1 pm  Sunday 13th October
Tutor: Marian Shapiro
Cost: $120 per person plus materials fee $25

In this workshop, students will use paint, papers and other materials under tempered glass (crash glass), combined with other mosaic materials if desired, to produce unique mosaics suitable for indoor display.   Although basic materials will be provided, participants are encouraged  to bring their own thin, flat, materials to put under the glass, plus any mosaic inclusions they wish to use. No mosaic experience necessary.

The course will start with introductions and expectations, plus an outline of what we will be doing.  A brief visual presentation of both 2-D and 3-D tempered glass mosaics will follow, to give participants ideas and inspiration.  Students will then decorate their mosaic bases and complete them by adding tempered glass.  The short session on day 2 is for grouting and finishing.

Each participant will make a small hanging mosaic (25 c m x 25 cm) suitable for interior display, consisting of a mosaic base decorated with either paint, thin papers, foil, glitter or a mixture and covered with tempered glass.

Basic materials including tempered glass, paint, foils and adhesive will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring small amounts of additional mosaic material which can be used in with the tempered glass, bearing in mind that tempered glass is usually thicker than materials such as vitreous glass.  Suitable additions could include; glass gems, fused glass inserts, beach glass, ceramic, etc, but they must have a flat back.

Students may also bring any thin, flat paper materials they might wish to put under the glass: printed paper, foils, decorative wrapping paper etc. NB:  anything that is printed must be from a professional printer – items printed on a deskjet printer are not suitable for this method as the glue can cause bleeding of the ink.

Full electronic course notes will be provided.

Introducing Abby Howells

My art training has focussed on painting, etching and textiles. I also trained in drawing and sculpture.  My own work focusses on the individual qualities of the mediums I use, which are predominantly in the tapestry medium.  In my work I focus on an idea that grows and takes shape, slowly becoming a body of work that echoes and evokes the central idea.

Introducing Cathie Cox.

Unfortunately Cathy is not available Term 3, 2013.

Cathie will be offering Mixed Media for Children 9 to 12 yrs  Wednesdays 4:00 till 5:30  and  Drawing for Children 9 - 12 yrs Thursdays 4:00 till 5:30.

Art making and creating have been an absorbing and fulfilling interest for me since childhood. After study at TAFE and university I continue to find the greatest enjoyment in the fundamental practice of drawing. I like to use a variety of media (eg. pencil, silverpoint, watercolour pencil and watercolour) on different supports. Currently I am exploring the art of papercutting in combination with mixed media as an extension of drawing. I look forward to working at BMCAC as an opportunity for shared enjoyment through art making and discussion.

Programme outlines for the mixed media and drawing classes.

Mixed Media: Introduction to the practices of mixed media and portraiture (which will serve as a theme). Surface treatments including frottage, printing paste paper and plaster paper. Decorate a folder to hold class work.
Discuss portraiture (incl. backgrounds to portraits) create portrait/s using surface treatments already explored.
Textured backgrounds using applied papers and collage (found objects etc.)
Discuss composition, try a portrait/double portrait with techniques previously practised. Look at examples eg. Anne Bagby. Try stencils and stamping.
Using photocopies, making transfers, applying colour to transfers.
Simple book making or repurposing a book.
Assemblage using a shallow box or a plaster/gyprock base as support.

Drawing: Introduction, discuss drawing and importance of looking, holding a pencil, using a drawing board, relaxing about results. Discuss and demonstrate media and supports. Experiment with markmaking including blotting and automatic drawing. Create a folder to hold work.
Discussion of different ways of creating the drawn image eg. different emphasis - line, colour, tone etc. Try contour drawing using an object/s. Expressive/gestural drawing, discuss emotion and markmaking.
2D drawing using a gridded background, a striped background, relating the object to its background and vice versa.
Colour media demonstration, experimentation, try coloured paper. Tracing a photo combine with pop art colouring, shading and hatching, line patterns.
Proportions, relating one part to another, looking at negative shapes. Try simple still life eg. containers/fruit, tools, simple furniture.

3D drawing - overlapping shapes using simple objects, imaginary cityscape. Discuss light and shade, creating a 3dimensional look.
Discussion of aerial perspective, effect on light, colour, detail. Look at examples, discuss. Portraits with landscape backgrounds.
Proportions of the face/figure (touch on perspective).

Make a concertina book.
